Types of Foot and Ankle Injuries in Slip and Fall Accidents

The most common injuries to the foot and ankle when a slip and fall accident occurs are:

  •  Strained Ankle– This is most commonly referred to as a “ Rolled “ ankle. The injuries are to the band of tissue that connect the muscles to the bone. These injuries can take months to heal according to the Mayo Clinic.

  • Sprained Ankle- This is the most common injury associated with sports. There are three types of sprained ankles.

  1. Stretched Ligaments of the band that connects two bones together

  2. Partial Tear of the ligaments

  3. A full tear of the ligaments

The third is the most severe and sprained ankles can take longer than even an unbroken ankle to heal believe it or not.

  • Broken Ankle– One or more of the 26 bones in the foot or ankle is broken or fractured. Depending on the severity of the break, where the break is located, and number of bones broken will determine how long the recovery process could be. In most cases broken ankle or foot bones will require some sort of surgery to repair.

  • Torn Achilles tendon– Without your achilles tendon you would not be able to walk. If this tendon is torn the recovery is a long slow process that requires surgery and months of physical therapy

  • Lisfranc (Midfoot ) Fracture– Since there are 26 bones in the foot and ankle it is possible to break the bones in the midfoot area. This can be complicated to repair and heal from and can be very painful.

  • Dislocated Toe– If you have ever done this you know. You jam your big toe when you fall and it tears the ligaments that hold it together. This is extremely painful and there is nothing theory can do for you but tape the dislocated toe to the other toes after it is placed back in alignment.

  • Crush Injury- These happen a lot during car accidents when the car is pushed into the front of the car. Crushed feet also happen when something heavy falls from above onto your foot. This can be devastating and require multiple surgeries and in some cases it may not be something that you can fully recover from. In some cases crush injuries can be so severe that amputation may be required.

  • Lacerations- We know that deep cuts to your feet don’t heal nearly as fast as cuts on other parts of the body, and despite wearing shoes you can get cuts during a slip and fall accident

  • Puncture wound– Have you ever stepped on a piece of glass or nail while working and fell as a result of the object being stuck inside your foot. Never remove the object, just head straight to the emergency room and have a medical professional remove the glass or nail. If you try to remove it yourself you could damage your foot or ankle even more.

Chronic Pain, Lack of Mobility & other Complications

Like most tendons and joints injuries can linger and take months or even years to heal.

After the surgeries, casts, physical therapy has been finished you may have effects that can last a lifetime.

Many foot injuries affect the victim of the accident or slip and fall forever.

Further injuries down the road are common after a foot or ankle injury.

Bone Spurs, bunions, weak tendons or joints causing chronic pain are common after a broken foot bone or ankle.

The complications may be lifelong and may require ongoing foot or ankle care long after the injury occurred.

If you work in the hospitality industry you may not be able to work at all after a slip and fall work injury.

In some cases you may not even be able to wear shoes or at least cool shoes anymore and you may be stuck with Orthopedic shoes and we have all seen how cute those are.

For a runner for example not being able to run anymore would be tragic.

That’s why maximizing your personal injury claim at the time is important.

You don’t get a second chance to seek compensation when filing a personal injury claim.
