Roundup Weed Killer Linked to Cancer
Glyphosate, the primary ingredient found in Roundup weed killer, is an herbicide used to kill grass and weeds. Although Roundup is used frequently in homes and farms throughout the world, research from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) shows a potential link between exposure to glyphosate and certain terminal cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Exposure to Glyphosate Can Be Deadly
Manufactured by Monsanto, a multibillion dollar corporation, glyphosate is a compound that has been used in Roundup and other commercial herbicides for more than 40 years. Because of the chemical’s widespread, long-term use in homes and farms across the globe, it poses the threat of exposure to just about anyone. Types of exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate products may include:
- Breathing the air near a treated area
- Touching plants that have been treated
- Drinking from a contaminated water supply
- Eating food grown in treated soil
No matter where you live, you may be at risk of exposure to this dangerous chemical. Although Monsanto has questioned possible health risks liked to glyphosate exposure, recent lawsuits and the IARC’s 2015 study have led government agencies to continue to dissect the link between glyphosate and deadly cancers.
Glyphosate Cancer Victim Awarded $289 Million
In August 2018, a former school groundskeeper with terminal cancer received $289 million in damages after many years of Roundup use and exposure. The San Francisco jury found Roundup to be the cause of illness, and a large portion of the award was intended to punish Monsanto.
Although this is the first Roundup cancer case to go to trial, it sets a precedent for the more than 4,000 Roundup claims that are pending in state and federal courts.
