Winnemucca, NV (August 06, 2020) – A 37-year-old resident of Winnemucca was killed in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 5th in an accident that took place on U.S. 95, roughly five miles north of the city of Winnemucca.
Officers from the Nevada Highway Patrol reported that at around 1:35 a.m., a silver-and-black Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck was traveling southbound along U.S. 95 when it swerved across the centerline and collided with a white KIA Optima that was heading north. As the left front portions of both vehicles crashed into one another, the pick-up truck flipped over, rolling right over the top of the KIA.
The driver of the Dodge, a young male, was not wearing his seat belt which allowed him to be thrown from his vehicle. The truck finally came to a stop upside down and blocking traffic in either direction. It was at this point that it burst into flames.
The KIA finally stopped on its wheels. The driver, Zoraida Rios, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Dodge’s driver was transported via ambulance to Humboldt General Hospital. His current medical condition is not known.
Crash investigators with the Nevada Highway Patrol have said they suspect alcohol is a contributing factor in this fatal accident. An investigation is currently underway.

Per a publication from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 37,400 car accident-related fatalities across the United States in 2016. This total marks an increase of almost 6% from the year before.
In that same year, just under 330 people were killed in car accidents in the state of Nevada alone. This number extrapolates out to a vehicle fatality rate of 11 deaths for every 100,000 residents, which is about halfway in between the highest and the lowest.
