Depo Provera has been around since 1959 and is mainly used as a form of birth control and to help with menopause in women.

Depo Provera is manufactured by Pfizer and other companies who make generic versions of the medication.

Depo Provera is the brand name for medroxyprogesterone acetate and is usually administered as an injection every three months by a doctor.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate is a hormone that suppresses ovulation in women to help prevent pregnancy.

Depo Provera stays in a woman’s system for up to 15 weeks but it is recommended that they get an injection every 13 weeks to ensure the continuation of the contraceptive.

If you miss a shot after 15 weeks it is recommended that use an alternative form of birth control.

Depo Provera is also used to help women through menopause as well as help with endometriosis, stopping the growth of cells outside of the uterus.

Depo Provera has also been used to help treat certain types of cancer including kidney, breast and endometrial by limiting the growth of certain types of cancer cells.

Depo Provera has been used to manage medical conditions like anemia, sickle cell disease, seizures, etc.

Although there are many uses for the synthetic hormone that is similar to the natural hormone progesterone it is mainly used for birth control and if taken properly can be 99% effective.

Depo Provera has come with some controversy over the years including side effects and legal ramifications by users of the medicine.

Risks of Depo Provera Use –

Depo Provera is used primarily for birth control but has been linked to several severe side effects and illnesses that can be deadly in some cases.

Some of the most common risk and illnesses include:

Stroke or heart attack
Liver problems
Osteoporosis (bone loss)
Blood clots, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
Increase of certain cancers like breast cancer or ovarian cancer
Brain tumors
