12-Year-Old Girl’s Death Related To School Bus Hitting Handlebars
After a 12-year-old girl was killed in an accident on Monday, october 6th. The investigation concluded that a school bus hit the handlebars on her bike causing the accident.
Haylee Ryan, a 12-year-old Lied Stem Academy student, was leaving school on Monday October 6th on West Tropical Parkway.
Ryan was riding her bike westbound on Tropical when the bus went past her just west of N. Emerald Eagle Street. A vehicle was parked in the bike lane, and when the bus contacted the left handlebar, the right handlebar struck the stationary vehicle. As she fell to the ground, the rear wheels of the bus ran over her lower extremities. The bus continued down the street 121 feet until it stopped.
The bus driver, a 75-year-old who has not been named since this is an ongoing investigation has not been charged at this time.
The Metropolitan Police department has one witness who was on the sidewalk at the time of the crash. No one else including the 55 students on the bus saw the accident.
