Hit-and-run driver arrested after killing pedestrian in SW Las Vegas Valley
A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in a southwest Las Vegas valley collision on Friday morning. The crash occurred on Fort Apache Road, north of West Rochelle Avenue near southern Summerlin, around 5:07 a.m. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a white Jeep Wrangler had been travelling south on Fort Apache Road in the left-most travel lane, approaching the intersection of Rochelle Avenue.
Witnesses at the scene told police that a pedestrian had been seen walking south on Fort Apache in the leftmost travel lane, approaching the intersection of Rochelle Avenue. Police said the collision happened when the front of the Jeep collided with the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep failed to stop at the collision scene and continued south on Fort Apache Road, which witnesses also confirmed to police. On Friday evening, Metro police announced they had arrested the driver of the vehicle.
The driver was identified as 30-year-old Denise Velez of Las Vegas. Velez was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on hit and run charges.
