MY TRIBE
By Richard A. Harris
A tribe is a group of people connected to one another through commitment to the same principles. Since the beginning of time, human beings have been part of one tribe or another. For over 35 years, the Nevada Justice Association has been my tribe.
A tribe of heretics, nonconformist lawyers who dare to dissent, to challenge the dogma of no accountability, who fight for their clients – the injured, the disabled, the families of loved ones lost – and make the world safer.
A tribe with leaders who understand what they cannot compromise on – who do not water down the message in order to make the tribe more mainstream – leaders who realize that a small, motivated and strongly connected tribe is far more powerful than a larger group with no passion for a cause.
A tribe with heroes, people who are admired and idealized for their courage and outstanding achievements in the courtroom and halls of the legislature.
As a trial lawyer, I’ve enjoyed success in the courtroom, but I found over the years that my strongest talent was putting together a winning team, collaborating with the best lawyers and creating a laboratory at my office for lawyers to cultivate their skills.
Young personal injury lawyers frequently tell me they want to be like me, to have a large personal injury practice like mine. I smile and say, “Yesterday, I was you.” Yesterday, I was in law school. Yesterday, I was at my first of more than 30 annual Nevada Justice Association convention seminars where I heard my heroes say things like, “What are you waiting for? File suit!” and, “Be patient. The good cases will come.” “Do a good job – the money will follow.” And then I blinked, and 35 years had gone by….
This summer, I received the Nevada Justice Association Lifetime Achievement Award – an award reserved for my trial lawyer heroes through the years. I think of my Mom, who had the heart of an angel, who loved unconditionally and always smiled. My Dad, the hardest working person I’ve ever known, did not compromise when it came to what’s right. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for inspiring me to be a lawyer for the people.
There are powerful special interests who want to take away the rights of our underdog clients. We will not give in. We will not turn against each other. We will always stand united – as proud members of the Nevada Justice Association to protect the people, to defend their rights, and take action against those who are responsible for the harms they cause.
They say it’s not where you go in life; it’s who you go with. I’m grateful to be on this important journey with my tribe, the trial lawyers of the Nevada Justice Association.
