SustainableNevada Nevada has always been a land of vast and varied natural resources. Fur trappers and caravanners were among the first to explore the State’s abundance as they traveled the Old Spanish Trail through Southern Nevada between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. Then, early State settlers sought to discover its wealth of silver and gold during the mining boom. Today, Nevada continues to be an untapped source for renewable energy development and other environmental efforts, leading the way in sustainability advancements through innovation and technology. As Nevada continues to make strides in renewables, many companies and visionaries have committed to creating a more enduring Nevada for future generations. Here are three homegrown projects leading the change to sustainable practices around the State: Tesla Gigafactory 1 Just outside Sparks, Nevada, automotive and energy storage company Tesla is continuing its mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy with building the Gigafactory 1. As part of the factory’s build-out, Tesla will be installing a 70-megawatt solar rooftop array, which once complete will be seven times larger than the largest existing system. The factory is only about 30% complete, but already has a footprint of 1.9 million square feet and houses over 4.9 million square feet of operational space across several floors. Tesla says the Gigafactory 1 aims to be the biggest building in the world and will be entirely powered by renewable resources to achieve net zero energy through the 70-megawatt system and solar ground installations.
