The annual Richard Harris Law Firm scholarship program for high school students in Clark County, Nevada, is underway. This annual program has previously been known as Students with a Cause. The name of the program is now the Spirit of Nevada Scholarship Program in order to reflect the pride we have in being a part of the Nevada community.
This year’s theme is “Discover Both Sides.” Students are encouraged to go beyond the bright lights and dig deeper to explore the exceptional people, places, charities, and social causes making Nevada a better place.
What is the Spirit of Nevada Scholarship Program?
This program was initiated by the firm in 2010 as the Students with A Cause scholarship program. The program has evolved over time to allow more students the opportunity for participation. Originally, the program required the students to prepare an original public service announcement (PSA)-style video of 30 seconds in length, which was based on and supported the theme for that year.
Each year, a new theme is selected, and student entries are judged based on the quality of the entry and how well the entry supported and communicated the theme for that year.
More Avenues of Expression
Beginning in 2016, the program was expanded to allow more ways for students to express themselves. Videos are still part of the program; however, other forms of expression are also available for students who may not be skilled in producing videos. The four categories of entries are:
- Work of art
- Short story or poem
A first-place entry is selected for each of the four categories, and each first-place entrant is awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Additionally, the school the student attends is awarded $500.
A panel of judges, made up of a panel of media and broadcast experts, will review and select winning entries in each category based on content, persuasiveness, creativity and production/presentation, and awareness.
The program is available to all high school students in Clark County, Nevada.
