Long Beach, CA (August 13, 2020) – Local law enforcement officers are currently looking into a wrong-way collision that took place on the morning of Thursday, August 13th, and left one male victim dead and a female victim nursing critical injuries in Long Beach.
The fatal head-on accident took place at around 3:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Long Beach 710 Freeway next to the San Diego 405 Freeway.
As stated in an incident report from the California Highway Patrol, a 2019 Dodge Challenger, being driven by a male was, for reasons that have yet to be determined, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway when he collided head-first with a 2016 GMC Acadia being driven by a 29-year-old woman from Buena Park.
Attending emergency medical personnel pronounced the Challenger’s driver dead at the scene.
The woman suffered critical injuries during the collision and was transported via ambulance to a local trauma center for emergency medical care.
Traffic on both sides of the freeway was at a standstill until around 7:30 a.m. to expedite a professional inquiry conducted by local law enforcement officers into cause and liability for the incident.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her family in hopes of a full recovery.

Driver error is the number one cause of California car accidents, an overwhelming portion of which takes place at night. Driving at night increases the likelihood of being injured in a car crash due to the higher number of drunk drivers. Substantially limited visibility is another element of nighttime driving that produces higher accident rates.
