Coachella, CA (August 11, 2020) – An unnamed teacher from Westside Elementary School was killed on the night of Friday, August 8th, after she was struck by an SUV along Avenue 50 in Coachella.
As stated by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, there was a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Jason Verdugo Jr. and caused his SUV to swerve off the roadway and onto a sidewalk where it collided with the teacher and one other pedestrian.
The shooting victim was traveling along Avenue 50 when he was hit by a bullet that was shot from another vehicle. A passenger in the victim’s SUV told his mother that the shooting was deliberate and gang-related, but the victim’s family maintains that Verdugo Jr. was not affiliated with any gangs.
One of the pedestrians that was struck by the SUV sustained minor injuries. The elementary school teacher, however, suffered fatal injuries.
Police are treating this incident as a homicide, but has not yet been verified as gang-related.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
