Anaheim, CA (August 12, 2020) – A pregnant pedestrian died following a car accident involving an alleged drunk driver on Katella Avenue on the evening of Tuesday, August 11th.

According to a story published by a local news source, the fatal collision took place at around 7:35 p.m. just east of Euclid Street.

As stated by responding law enforcement officers, a white Jeep SUV traveling down Katella Avenue in Anaheim hopped the curb, drove along the sidewalk for approximately 300 feet, and then hit a 23-year-old woman from Anaheim who was almost nine months pregnant.

Official reports indicate that the victim and her husband were walking down the sidewalk when the SUV struck her. The vehicle then swerved across Bayless Street and crashed into a car wash.

Emergency medical personnel also reported to the scene of the accident. On their arrival, they discovered the pregnant woman lying on the sidewalk, having sustained life-threatening injuries caused by the impact. She was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center, where she died a short while later.

The identity of the victim has not been yet made known as officials are currently awaiting the notification of her next of kin. Paramedics that were on the scene confirmed that the newborn was in the hospital in the neonatal ICU unit.

In the meantime, additional emergency responders transported the 40-year-old female driver of the SUV to a local medical facility for treatment of injuries that were classified as minor. Crash investigators believe the woman was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when the incident took place and arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Police also revealed that the woman has two previous convictions for DUIs and, at the time of the incident, was driving on a suspended license.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
